IC and OOC: What's the difference?
When roleplaying, there are two important and commonly used terms, "In Character" and "Out of Character". In order to avoid confusion, I have created this guide which helps to explain these two terms.
In Character
In character means that you are simply roleplaying as your character. You are not yourself, but rather the character you are roleplaying as. Remember to use names as they are in the roleplay and not as they are on the forum.
For example, let's say there's a member named "Bob". He roleplays a cat named "Mudtalon". Well, in the roleplay, you wouldn't call him Bob; you'd call him Mudtalon.
Roleplaying on the forum...
Roleplaying on the forum is simple; simply write out what your characters do just like in the books.
When making your character say something, write what they say within quotation marks (" ").
e.g. "Nice catch!" said Froststar.
When making your character do an action, simply write what they do in a sentence.
e.g. Dawnheart purred and thanked her for the compliment.
When showing what a character is thinking, use italics ([i*]text[/i*] without the *s).
e.g. For a BreezeClan cat, that is. thought Hawkfrost.
Roleplaying on Toontown...
When making your character say something, you talk as you normally would.
e.g. "I brought you some herbs."
When making your character do an action, you either move your toon as such, or talk inside dashes (-'s).
e.g. "- sets down marigold and yarrow -"
When making your character say something in a certain fashion, use dashes (-'s) to indicate what tone of voice they are using.
If you use brackets to talk OOC, you might use parenthesees instead of dashes.
e.g. "- whispers - What other herbs do we need?" OR "( whispers ) What other herbs do we need?"
If you use brackets to talk OOC, you could also use parenthesees to indicate a quiet voice, whisper, or thought, but make sure the others around you know what you mean to do.
e.g. "( Do you need anything else? )" OR "( I wonder if I should find some more herbs. )"
To show what your character is thinking or to indicate sleep, perhaps a dream, use a thought bubble (type a . before saying anything else).
e.g. ".Now where did I put that moss?" OR ".- sleeping -" OR ".- dreaming about catching a mouse -"
Note: If you see somebody do this, remember not to respond to it as your character cannot read the other character's mind.
To indicate your character signaling others silently in perhaps a battle or hunting patrol, use dashes (-'s) within a thought bubble (type a . before saying anything else).
e.g. ".- signals to stop with tale -" OR ".- flicks ear, indicating a signal to run left -"
Out of Character
When not roleplaying, you are talking out of character.
Roleplaying on the forum...
You can use an "OOC:" tag to indicate that you are talking out of character. This can be in italics or separated from the rest of the post using a horizontal rule ([hr*] without the *), or symbols such as -'s, *'s, or ~'s.
If you do this, it is best to use a "BIC:" tag if, in the same post below your OOC comment, you continue typing in character.
e.g.
"Hawktail! Hawktail!" chanted Lunarwind, relieved that StormClan now had a deputy after Moonpool retired.
OOC: Congrats, Hawktail!
BIC: She walked back to the medicine den to sort some herbs.
---
Alternatively, you may use double parenthesees or brackets to indicate OOC discussion.
After the meeting was dismissed, Hawktail leaped down from the island, and used the stepping stones to reach the fresh-kill pile. She took a mouse from the pile and started eating it.
[[Thanks!]]
After she finished her meal, she went to the warriors' den to take a rest.
---
You could use both these methods of indicating OOC as well.
Froststar lept down from the island as well, then swam back to the shore and went over to her den. She was thinking of which cats to take to the Gathering the next day.
((OOC: No problem!))
Roleplaying on Toontown...
Simply use either parenthesees or brackets to show that you are chatting out of characer.
e.g. "Mm, I think I'll have a mouse. [ Heya, Kiwi ]" OR "Mind if I share that with you? ( Hey, Rae )" OR "Has anyone seen Hal? )" OR "No, sorry! ]"
