f r o s t s t a r ;; Froststar snorted in her sleep and rolled onto her side, unconsciously landing on one of the sharper sticks that her nest was built out of. Her wintery blue eyes flew open and she let out a yelp of surprise, flinching at the unexpected brightness flooding into her den. The white she-cat groaned. It must be past sunhigh! Why didn't anyone wake me?
She stumbled out of her den and into the StormClan camp, the feeling that she was forgetting something important nagging her from the back of her mind. The StormClan leader waved her tail in greeting to Lunarwind, the Clan's medicine cat, who seemed sane enough at the moment. Still, she didn't want the silver tabby to throw a sudden fit where any of the other three Clans could see, because that wouldn't exactly help the situation they seemed to be getting into. Leaf-bare had only just begun, and although there wasn't any snow yet, it was freezing and prey had become scarce. It was cold enough that the river bordering StormClan and IvyClan had frozen, Froststar remembered from a recent border patrol's report, so snow couldn't be too far off.
Froststar's paws automatically guided her to the fresh-kill pile, which was pitifully small. Only a small thrush remained, and she felt guilty about taking it. Hungry as she was, Froststar decided to leave the thrush to her Clanmates. She had two lives to spare.. her Clanmates only had one. Unfortunately, since the river was frozen, it was tough luck for her Clan to find any prey - StormClan cats were pitiful at hunting land prey. She wondered how the other Clans were getting along with such little amounts of prey. Probably better than her Clan, she thought almost bitterly, as their prey must be easier to catch than fish below a frigid layer of ice. Snapping back to her other thoughts, Froststar remembered something with a jolt. The other Clans! I haven't decided which cats will be attending the Gathering yet!
A few minutes was all it took for her to make up her mind about which cats would go. She summoned her Clanmates with a yowl. "Let all cats old enough to swim gather to hear my words!" She paused for a moment to let the cats gather before continuing to speak. "The cats accompanying me to the Gathering will be Hawktail, Silvermist, Doveheart.. Wolfheart and Singepaw! Riverstrike will stay to guard the camp with Lunarwind."
Froststar's last few words were met with the lash of a silver tail and a snort of annoyance. Lunarwind opposed her leader with a sharp tongue and indigo glare. "Oh, sure, keep your medicine cat confined to camp while all of the Clan's warriors go to the Gathering!"
"StormClan has more than one medicine cat, and it won't hurt to stay in camp for a night. You attended the last Gathering and Silvermist didn't, so it's only fair that she goes this time." The StormClan leader met her Clanmate's gaze evenly. Lunarwind rolled her eyes and slunk off into her den, leaving Froststar to finish her announcement. "Meeting dismissed! We will leave at sundown, which isn't far from now." leader of s t o r m c l a n

Doveheart trotted into the camp with a scrawny mouse dangling from her jaws. She walked next to Hawktail, who hadn't managed to catch much either. As she wordlessly dropped her mouse next to the lone thrush in the fresh kill pile, she bitterly wondered how StormClan would survive. The river had frozen over, and the clutches of leaf-bare wouldn't provide much opportunity for prey. They had to solely depend on land prey, which they, to be frank, were horrid at catching. She tried to keep these morbid thoughts out of her mind as she padded to the warriors' den.
She curled up in the back of the den and half-closed her eyes. Knowing that she might either have to hunt or patrol or go to the Gathering later, she wanted to rest but not fall asleep. If she did, she would just be even more exhausted when she woke up. The frigid air swirled around her, and she fluffed up her fur against the cold. Doveheart was extremely sensitive to cold weather and leaf-fall and leaf-bare in general. She often caught colds, too, which impacted the clan's hunting and patrol numbers.
Not long passed before she heard Froststar's summoning call. Doveheart groaned and dragged herself out of her ragged nest, shaking her fur briefly and hurrying out of the den. She sat a few paces away from the rest of the cats and glanced up as Froststar spoke.
When she heard her name called for the Gathering, Doveheart stood up and stretched, half-wishing Froststar hadn't picked her. She felt a bit stuffy and just wanted to sleep. Regardless, though, she hated to miss gatherings. It always nagged her when she missed something important, which, to her luck, she usually did. She resolved to not mention her somewhat cold-like condition to Froststar and made her way back to the den.
On her way, she was walking a bit too fast and somehow managed to scrape her paw on a rock. Doveheart hissed in annoyance and stopped abruptly, examining the wound. A bit of blood appeared on the surface of her pad. Flicking her ear in annoyance, she licked it thoroughly, not wanting to bother Lunarwind. She seemed irritated she hadn't been picked to go to the Gathering, and she didn't want to get on her bad side or anything.

Singepaw lay sleeping in her nest, mouth slightly open. She had spent a long day of hunting with little success, as she proved to be as clumsy as ever. What if I can't become a warrior? What if I stay an apprentice forever, since I can't hunt? she had thought earlier. It took little time for her to fall asleep despite her worries, though.
Froststar's summoning call sounded, and Singepaw awoke, startled. "Wuzzat?" she said drowsily. She jumped up, suddenly alert as she recognized Froststar's voice. She scrambled out of her den. Oh, yes, the Gathering! How could I have forgotten! She began to race towards the claw-rock, but slowed herself down. If she was to ever be a warrior, she would need more dignity than that.
Singepaw sat and listened to the names Froststar was calling. When she said her name, she thought Yes! My second gathering! When Froststar was finished speaking, she raced back to her nest and began washing herself, attempting to make her look dignified and lofty to the other Clans. It would give StormClan a good image. She didn't want to be disrespectful, but she was glad Lunarwind wasn't going too, again, to make the Clan have a better image.

Lunarwind gave a hiss of annoyance as she ripped the shriveled roots off of a carelessly harvested marigold plant. The pitiful amount of herbs StormClan had just wouldn't do; leaf-bare brought illness and made tempers short, so disputes over what little prey there was in the territories wouldn't be a rare occurrence. The silver tabby hated seeing her Clanmates suffer, even if they could get on her nerves from time to time. Frustrated as she was at not being chosen to go to the Gathering, she wasn't about to let her Clan down. She would wait until the Gathering was over, then she'd slip out of camp to look for herbs. Yes, that was all. Herbs.
* * *
Wrapped in her concealed thoughts, Lunarwind was dimly aware of the sun starting to set. Froststar would soon call for her Clanmates to travel to the sacred grounds of the meeting-place, and they'd share news with the other Clans peacefully. When leaf-bare would fully settle in, however, the Gatherings would not be so peaceful: narrowed eyes and suspicions of their rivals stealing every last scrap of prey..
